Afghanistan refuses to release Pakistani policemen

NOWSHERA: Afghanistan on Saturday formally rejected a request by Pakistan to release two of its police officials who have been detained in the country. According to sources, Afghanistan arrested the policemen two months ago for having illegally entered the country, accusing them of being involved in “serious crimes”. However, NWFP Senior Police Inspector Waqar Khan, in meetings with Afghan Ministry officials, stressed that the police officers were innocent of all charges against them. But the Interior Ministry said that the governor of Jalabad had jurisdiction over the issue, since it was of a provincial nature. According to sources, however, he refused to meet a delegation of Pakistani police officials to discuss the men’s release. The detained policemen, identified as Zameen and Gulistan, have been handed over to the Jalabad district jail, they added. online
